In this session...

BAME (Black and Minority Ethnic) communities have traditionally been underrepresented in the ballot box; Parliament wanted to correct and sought a digital approach. Our solution was the social campaign 'Your Story, Our History' which gave ordinary people from these communities the platform to talk frankly and openly about their past experiences and how legislation has lead to a progressive change in society.

The campaign resonated with audiences because of the authenticity of the participants, these were ordinary members of the public, not celebrities or politicians, who spoke their personal truth. Our goal was not to patronise the target audience by saying things are perfect, but highlight legislative progress by engaging in the democratic process.

Our Participants were unscripted and unrehearsed, in fact we chose to keep some imperfections from their performance in the final cut so the audience got a sense of this. Intermittent sections of archive contextually supported each piece. Aesthetically we chose a minimal set, and had our participants speak directly to camera and to the audience which removed any distraction and placed the emphasis on their story.

In 2017, we were commissioned to continue the series of films, this time to celebrate 50 years since the passing of the 1967 Sexual Offenses Act, where members of the LGBTQI+ communities spoke candidly about issues such as the right to marry and gender equality. Parliament commissioned a third instalment in 2018 to mark the centenary of the women's right to vote. The women interviewed spoke frankly and openly about important issues such as the FGM act, the abortion act, and gaining the right to vote.

A first for Parliament; Your Story, Our History has been their most engaged series of online content of all time and continues to drive healthy debate across the country.

"These powerful films are a timely reminder of how parliamentary legislation has played a major role in changing people's lives and shaping the UK over the last 50 years."
