Like all new forms of media, credibility for thought leaders is not always established right away. As podcasting becomes more popular, there is often a debate on whether or not they are considered a credible media outlet. For example, the recent trial of missing Georgia beauty queen Tara Grinstead, one of Georgia’s oldest cold cases, received an unlikely break when filmmaker Payne Lindsey decided to investigate her disappearance.
His debut podcast “Up and Vanished” cracked a decade-old case, leading to two arrests — thus sparking a discussion around podcasters being a legitimate source of media. Given the impact of his podcast’s investigation of the case, host Payne Lindsey was allowed to cover the trial that had been three years in the making.
In this panel, Lindsey, along with Rabia Chaudry (attorney, author, and advocate), Marc Smerling (Founder, Truth Media), and panel moderator, two-time Emmy®-winning journalist, author, and producer Tamron Hall, will discuss how podcasters are reshaping the public perception of the medium and reaching listeners who can serve as citizen journalists, and the implications this has for advertisers who rely on creators to establish brand credibility.
