James Montgomery

James Montgomery is director of digital development for BBC News.

The role encompasses editorial strategy, product development and digital innovation across the BBC News division - Licence Fee-funded services in the UK, in World Service (news websites, apps and social in 29 languages besides English) and for BBC.com/news, the commercially funded, internationally-facing News website.

Current projects include the introduction of vertical video formats to BBC News’ market-leading app, the development of data-led "audience engagement” insights and workflows in the newsroom, and the launch of 11 new language services in World Service.

James joined the BBC in 2009 from the Financial Times, where he worked for 12 years and held a number of roles including editor of FT.com, US news editor (based in New York) and Analysis editor.

Outside the BBC, he is a non-executive director of Nation Media Group, the largest independent media company in East Africa.
