Rio de Janeiro is believed to hold around 800 favelas, housing approximately 1.6 million residents. The mostly impoverished hillside communities are largely controlled by drug traffickers, although the city is attempting to implement a pacification program. Yet beyond the headlines of murders and drug kingpins, these communities, many of which were formed by former slaves, are strong cultural incubators containing a rich and vibrant sector of Brazilian life. Mario Tama of Getty Images will discuss how he accesses these communities and why he feels it is important to document favela life.
