Dr Mhairi Aitken

Mhairi is an Ethics Fellow in the Public Policy Programme at The Alan Turing Institute, and an Honorary Senior Fellow at Australian Centre for Health Engagement, Evidence and Values (ACHEEV) at the University of Wollongong in Australia.

She is a Sociologist whose research examines social and ethical dimensions of digital innovation, particularly relating to AI.

She was included in the 2023 international list of 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics.

Previously she was a Senior Research Associate at Newcastle University where she worked on an EPSRC-funded project about machine learning in banking. Prior to that, she was a Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh.

Mhairi is passionate about finding creative ways to discuss he roles of data and AI. She has appeared at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and in stand-up comedy clubs. She is a regular contributor to media and has appeared on BBC Two's Politics Live, BBC Radio 4 Today and Woman's Hour, BBC Radio 5 Live and much more.
