In this session...
With increasing global uncertainty, there is the likelihood of a recession. In the case of competing budgets, sustainability and DEI are being traded off against each other. But does this depend on the approach? We debate a human-centred design approach versus a Sustainable Development Goal ‘top-down’ approach, particularly when only one of the SDG goals focuses on equality. Which route is stronger? What challenges exist for each route? What tensions? Some of the industry’s leading thinkers take on this ‘debate’.

Let's debate. On one hand, Sustainability - Environmental, Social &
Economic drivers are impacting the planet and society.
We see:
- A clear risk analysis from IPCC report and clear KPI framework from Paris agreement and COP commitments
- There are action plans across multiple SDGs including policy change
- Current industry focus on reducing environmental footprint of products and service
However, on the other hand, there's the DEI space, where often tensions and budgets compete:
- Here, the opportunity space with hidden risk profile and lacking clear corporate KPI framework
- Focuses on (new) audiences and communities that brands want to engage
- Improves relevancy of brands by supporting groups and designing new, accessible products for those groups
- Improves society by removing stereotypes and ensuring everyone has a equal voice
So, what takes centre stage? A healthier planet? Or a fairer society?
