D&AD Impact Categories: Responsible Production and Consumption

As concerns over issues like climate change, over-population, global hunger, and our warming planet begin to proliferate seemingly every corner of our everyday lives, more are turning to actionable, achievable solutions that work toward a better quality of life for all. The implementation of sustainable consumption and production of goods can lead to increased efficiency, reduced waste, rationalized inefficiencies and a set of achievable targets for sustainable, ethical targets.

The Responsible Production and Consumption category celebrates ideas, projects or initiatives that demonstrate sustainable management and efficient use of resources; products which encourage waste reduction, recycling and reuse; ideas that teach sustainable consumption behaviors, promote local products, or minimize carbon footprint.

During the 2016 D&AD Impact Awards, the Responsible Production and Consumption Pencil winners demonstrated the criteria in many ways. Winner of the prestigious White Pencil award, one of the highest honors at D&AD Impact, Ryman Eco is an environmentally sustainable typeface created by UK stationary retailer, Ryman, in creative collaboration with Grey London. The objective for the font, which uses an average 33 percent less ink that standard fonts, was to creative an eco-friendly design without compromising aesthetic desirability. Ryman Eco saves ink by producing the illusion of a fully-filled typeface letter, without wasting the ink.
