Is it possible to visually capture the experience of losing sight?

Notes on Blindness is a BFI funded feature film & multi-platform interactive project based on the audio diaries of writer & academic John Hull, who – after decades of steady deterioration – became totally blind in 1983.

The creative team behind Notes on Blindness will discuss how their work explores new approaches in the documentary form; using new forms of storytelling, gameplay mechanics and Virtual Reality.

The British Film Institute fund work across film development & production, audience development, operations and partnerships.

Based on the Emmy Award-winning short film of the same name, Notes on Blindness is the debut feature from Writer-Directors Peter Middleton & James Spinney. Embedding original documentary elements within cinematic interpretations and textured sound design, the filmmakers take the viewer on an illuminating and deeply personal journey deep into what John calls “a world beyond sight”.

Both the feature film and accompanying Virtual Reality piece aim to open up a public discourse about blindness, allowing audiences to understand and ‘feel’ their way into that discussion.

The feature-length documentary Notes on Blindness premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in January 2016, alongside its sister project, the VR experience Notes on Blindness: Into Darkness. The feature film will be released in the UK in summer 2016 through Curzon Artifical Eye. View Less
