In this session...

“Explaining a joke is like dissecting a frog. You understand it better but the frog dies in the process.” E.B. White

Like advertising, comedy is what Daniel Kahneman would call a "System One business". At some level, it defies rational explanation. In a free-ranging and unscripted discussion, Adland’s Rory Sutherland (Vice-Chairman, Ogilvy & Mather Group UK) questions Jimmy Carr on the Darwinian origins of humour, the role of bravado and the peculiar economics of comedy.

What makes a joke funny? Why are timing and delivery so crucial? Why is the detail so important? And is it just an evolutionary mechanism to allow ugly people to have sex?
