Technology is required to function in today's society - and yet it remains a barrier to millions of people. Where will we leave underserved populations as we move toward the metaverse?

The metaverse is hyped up to be a great equalizer: a platform agnostic, digital Tower of Babel where people can buy, sell, create and explore. But is it just another online world created by the rich, for the rich? For equity to prevail in the metaverse age, the tech industry must address the underlying diversity problem that has perpetuated inequity throughout technology's existence. Tech inclusivity means designing for accessibility, through the lens of different cultural, language and socioeconomic perspectives — and not just for those who can afford it. As tech companies scramble to hire highly specialized computer scientists, engineers and designers to build the metaverse, it is critical for diverse and underrepresented talent to be part of its creation. In the effort to seamlessly merge our physical and digital worlds, technology companies must put people first — and it starts with diversifying the talent they hire.
