Michael Howard (Baron Howard of Lympne) was the Leader of the Conservative Party & Leader of the Opposition from Nov 2003 to Dec 2005. He previously held cabinet positions in the governments of Margaret Thatcher & John Major, including Secretary of State for Employment (1990-92), Secretary of State for the Environment (1992-93) & Home Secretary (1993-97).
He became an MP in the 1983 general election, and in 1985 joined the
Government as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department of Trade and Industry in 1985 with responsibility for regulating the financial dealings of the City of London. In 1987 he became Minister for Local Government, then Minister for Water and Planning in 1988 before joining the Cabinet first as Secretary of State for Employment, then Secretary of State for the Environment, and
became Home Secretary in 1993.
In Opposition, Michael Howard served as Shadow Home Secretary, Shadow Foreign Secretary, Shadow Chancellor, and Leader of the Opposition.
