Richard Ayoade went to St. Catharine's College, Cambridge where he was president of the prestigious Footlights. In 2000, he appeared in Garth Marenghi's Fright Knight, a show he co-wrote with Matthew Holness. A year later its sequel won the Perrier Comedy Award. He and Holness took the Marenghi character to Channel 4, and this spawned the cult horror comedy series Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace which Richard directed, co-wrote and starred in.
Richard also appeared in the cult series The Mighty Boosh (2003-2007) alongside Noel Fielding, and won a BAFTA for Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme for his work as Moss in The IT Crowd (2006-2013).
As a feature film writer/director, Richard's directorial debut Submarine premiered at Toronto Film Festval in 2010, and won Best Screenplay at the British Independent Film Awards. His second film The Double also played at Toronto and was nominated Best British Film at the BIFAs, and Best Film at the London Film Festival.
