Elaine Constantine was a pioneer of the vibrant, documentary-inspired approach to fashion photography in the 1990s and early 2000s, offering a joyous alternative to the gloomy grunge aesthetic and was soon a regular contributor to The Face. She’s renowned for her ecstatic, colourful portrayal of British youth culture, and Anna Wintour has described her as “one of the most talented fashion photographers of her generation.”
Constantine’s work is essentially about ordinary people having a good time, and recently she has been working on her most ambitious project to date – writing and directing her first feature film, Northern Soul. The film opened in independent cinemas in October 2014 to popular and critical acclaim, making the box office top ten on it’s opening weekend, earning Elaine BAFTA and London Critics Circle nominations and winning NME’s Film of The Year award.
Elaine Constantine has contributed to The Face, i-D, W Magazine and French, Italian and US Vogues. Her recent 9Kisses Oscars portfolio for The New York Times features an array of Hollywood stars, including Julianne Moore, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell and Jack O’Connell, in a series of short films that have proven hugely popular.
Commercial clients have included Vivienne Westwood, Diesel and Burberry. Her photographs are held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London and have been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Britain and the Photographers’ Gallery.
